LAUNCH ISSUE • OCTOBER 12–18, 2026
Welcome to the West Valley edition, your weekly guide to Woodland Hills, Canoga Park, Chatsworth, Tarzana, West Hills and nearby neighborhoods. This edition explores an independent shopping corridor, a distinctive local retailer, a longtime neighborhood café, outdoor escapes, and practical community resources. Our events calendar lives in its own tab; we won't fill the newsletter with event cards.

Trivia Question❓

Which West Valley neighborhood is home to Stoney Point's sandstone formations?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

YOUR WEST VALLEY SHORTLIST

Canoga Park: Sherman Way is worth exploring on foot: neighborhood eateries, markets and independent retailers are clustered around the old downtown. The Canoga Park Improvement Association maintains a useful local food-business directory.

Woodland Hills: Valley Cultural Foundation, headquartered at 21600 Oxnard St., helps make summer concerts and community performances possible at Warner Park. See its programs and updates before making plans.

Chatsworth: Stoney Point Park offers unusually dramatic sandstone scenery just off Topanga Canyon Boulevard. Read access guidance before visiting.

West Hills: Shadow Ranch Recreation Center, 22633 Vanowen St., is one of the community's established public recreation anchors.
SHERMAN WAY: WHY CANOGA PARK'S MAIN STREET STILL MATTERS

There is an especially compelling stretch of the West Valley where the storefronts tell the neighborhood's story: Sherman Way in Canoga Park. Rather than just a route to drive through, the corridor supports independent restaurants, specialty grocers and shops that give the district a character you cannot copy with a chain-store blueprint.

Take Follow Your Heart Market & Café at 21825 Sherman Way. According to the business, its café began in 1970 as a seven-seat vegetarian counter. It has since grown into a plant-based restaurant and market, while keeping that neighborhood gathering-place identity. Nearby, the Canoga Park Improvement Association lists Cavaretta's Italian Deli at 22045 Sherman Way, Henri's Restaurant at 21601 Sherman Way, and India Sweets & Spices at 22011 Sherman Way among local dining options.

That mix is the point: different culinary traditions and business models exist within a relatively compact area. A small decision to buy lunch from a family-run deli, pick up groceries at a specialty market or try a local café keeps more attention on the businesses rooted here.

The neighborhood also has a piece of architectural history in the Madrid Theatre at 21622 Sherman Way. The city says the building began as a silent movie house in 1926, when Canoga Park was called Owensmouth. Important: the city currently lists the Madrid as closed for renovations; this is a history stop, not a currently operating show venue.

Plan a neighborhood visit: Start with a meal, explore nearby businesses, view the Madrid's exterior, and take a look at the Canoga Park business directory. For more background, consult the city's Madrid Theatre page and Follow Your Heart's history.

Not every new storefront has to be headline news to matter. Supporting the shops already here is itself a practical investment in the West Valley.
CANOGA PARK'S NEIGHBORHOOD MAIN STREET

The Sherman Way corridor remains home to longtime independent stores, restaurants and specialty markets. Among its recognizable landmarks are Cavaretta's Italian Deli, a family-operated business with roots dating to 1959, and Follow Your Heart Market & Café, whose history stretches to 1970. The Canoga Park Improvement Association lists more neighborhood merchants and restaurants for readers who want to shop locally: Explore the local business directory.

WOODLAND HILLS COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

The West Valley–Warner Center Chamber publishes a calendar of networking and community activities. Its October 12–18 listings include business networking and a community charity walk. Residents can check the official event schedule for registration information, locations and updates.
LOCAL SERVICE & CULTURE NOTES

Madrid Theatre renovation: The 290-seat city-owned theatre at 21622 Sherman Way is listed as closed for renovations. Do not head there expecting a performance; check Los Angeles Cultural Affairs for status updates.

West Valley library resources: The Los Angeles Public Library's West Valley Regional Branch is at 19036 Vanowen St. in Reseda. Available services listed by LAPL include Wi-Fi, public computers, wireless printing, scanners and technology lending. The branch directory provides contact details and current hours.

Free community arts: Valley Cultural Foundation's concerts and children's performance programs are a signature of the area's summer calendar. Its published 2026 updates include the Warner Park concert series; check the foundation's site for news rather than assuming a summer series is running in October.

Public recreation: City park listings identify Serrania Park, 20726 Wells Dr. in Woodland Hills, and Shadow Ranch Recreation Center, 22633 Vanowen St. in West Hills. Check city park information for facilities and any access advisories.
ONE WEEKEND, THREE SPECIFIC IDEAS

1. Visit Canoga Park's independent food corridor. Begin on Sherman Way with a planned stop at Follow Your Heart Market & Café, 21825 Sherman Way. Its published schedule lists the café daily, 10:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m., with weekend brunch 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Verify before leaving: hours and contact.

2. Explore Stoney Point in Chatsworth. This Los Angeles city park sits along Topanga Canyon Boulevard between Chatsworth Street and the 118 Freeway. Bring water and sturdy shoes; remain on appropriate public routes, and avoid climbing unless experienced and properly equipped. City parks directory.

3. Make it a neighborhood arts-and-library week. Browse Los Angeles Public Library's event calendar by date and branch; the West Valley Regional Branch is at 19036 Vanowen St. Library calendars are updated, so check the exact program and registration before traveling.

Looking just beyond this issue: LAPL lists an online 'Amityville and Beyond' author discussion hosted by the West Valley Regional Branch for Wednesday, October 21, 6:30–7:30 p.m. This is next week's calendar, not an October 12–18 event; see LAPL events for details.
ONE CALENDAR. ALL THE LOCAL EVENTS.
Concerts, community celebrations, workshops, networking, neighborhood gatherings and family activities are collected in the dedicated West Valley Insider Events calendar. Open the Events tab to see current and upcoming activities, organizers, venues and scheduling details. We maintain the calendar separately from the newsletter so readers can check it throughout the week rather than relying on a static email.
TWO WAYS TO FIND YOUR NEXT COMPANION

Dog adoption: The West Valley Animal Services Center in Chatsworth houses adoptable dogs of different ages, sizes and personalities. Visit the center's official page, select “View Pets At This Location” and check live profiles before arranging a visit. Individual animals can be adopted or transferred quickly, so current names and availability must be confirmed at the time of publication.

Cat adoption: Use the same shelter's live pet listings to find cats and kittens currently available, including information on each animal's characteristics and adoption status. Talk to shelter staff about introductions, care needs and the best match for your household.

West Valley shelter: 20655 Plummer St., Chatsworth, CA 91311. Phone (888) 452-7381. Shelter visiting hours and adoption details: official West Valley shelter. These are verified adoption pathways, not falsely labeled profiles of specific animals.

COMPOSED LIVING — A THOUGHTFUL SHOP IN VALLEY COUNTRY MARKET

At Valley Country Market on Ventura Boulevard, Composed Living presents a different model of neighborhood retail. Its store is not merely a place to pick up home décor. The business emphasizes useful, intentionally selected goods, artisan-made products, sustainable living and the practical idea that an organized living space can make daily life easier.

That approach gives shoppers an alternative to anonymous online purchasing. A local shop has the opportunity to explain where products come from, discuss how to use them, and introduce customers to makers and ideas they may not encounter elsewhere. Composed Living's retail page specifically highlights small businesses and artisans, home and housewarming gifts, and sustainability-minded selections.

The shop also treats its physical space as a gathering place. Its public program describes pop-up markets, workshops in organizing and Feng Shui, arts and crafts activities, clothing swaps and networking events. The schedule changes from month to month, so visitors should check upcoming dates rather than assuming a workshop runs every weekend.

This is exactly the kind of business a West Valley neighborhood publication should feature: a real local storefront that participates in the surrounding community, has a distinctive focus and offers something beyond a standard retail transaction.

Composed Living is a home organization and lifestyle business with a retail shop in Woodland Hills' Valley Country Market. Its shelves emphasize sustainable living, gifts, homewares and work by independent makers. Beyond retail, the store uses its space for workshops, community-building and pop-up events, including organizing and Feng Shui sessions. It is an example of a neighborhood business doing more than selling merchandise: it creates opportunities to meet makers, learn skills and connect locally.

The business says free validated parking is available. Check the shop's website for current hours, workshops and merchandise. Editorial spotlight; not a paid sponsorship.

FOLLOW YOUR HEART MARKET & CAFÉ — A CANOGA PARK ORIGINAL SINCE 1970

Some restaurants are remembered for a signature dish. Others become part of a neighborhood's identity. Follow Your Heart Market & Café on Sherman Way has managed to do both, growing out of a tiny vegetarian sandwich counter into a Canoga Park institution with a café, natural-food market and a history stretching more than five decades.

From seven seats to a neighborhood gathering place. The café's founders began in 1970 with a seven-seat food counter and juice bar tucked inside a natural-food store. The original curved counter has survived through the business's evolution and, according to the restaurant, remains in use. Over time, the café became a 67-seat restaurant, but kept its informal, communal approach: sit at a table, choose the patio or settle at the counter where regulars still gather.

What makes the menu distinctive. Follow Your Heart says its present café menu is 100 percent plant-based. The kitchen prepares much of its food from scratch, including burger patties, sauces, deli-style proteins and bread, using natural and largely organic ingredients. The restaurant offers an all-day menu, weekend brunch and a separate salt-, oil- and sugar-free menu. That makes it a useful option for groups with differing food preferences, whether someone is vegan or simply curious about a plant-based meal.

The story behind a familiar supermarket name. Follow Your Heart is also associated with Vegenaise, its egg-free mayonnaise. The company's history explains that it developed the product after discovering that an allegedly egg-free mayonnaise supplied to the café was actually mislabeled. Rather than abandon a popular avocado, tomato and sprouts sandwich, a founder worked to make a genuinely egg-free substitute. The resulting product eventually helped the brand expand beyond its neighborhood café into plant-based groceries sold more widely.

More than lunch. The adjoining market carries natural-food and wellness products and advertises rotating grocery and wellness specials. Readers could reasonably make this a two-part visit: a café meal followed by a browse through the market. The business also advertises catering services.

Plan your visit. Follow Your Heart Market & Café is at 21825 Sherman Way, Canoga Park, CA 91303; phone (818) 348-3240. The official website currently lists café service daily, 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., with last seating at 8 p.m.; brunch on Saturdays, Sundays and select holidays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and market hours daily, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Menus and hours can change, so confirm before traveling. See café menus and read the restaurant's history.

Follow Your Heart illustrates why longstanding independent dining rooms matter to the West Valley. They are not just places to eat; they preserve local stories, introduce ideas and give neighborhoods recognizable gathering places. This is a researched editorial profile, not a claim of firsthand dining or a paid endorsement.

CHATSWORTH'S STONEY POINT: A DIFFERENT SIDE OF THE WEST VALLEY

A sandstone landscape rises along Topanga Canyon Boulevard near Chatsworth Street, offering one of the northwest Valley's most distinctive public outdoor spaces. Stoney Point Park is known for rugged rock formations, unusual scenery, birdwatching and routes used by experienced rock climbers.

It makes a memorable half-day trip for residents looking for an alternative to shopping centers and freeway drives. Go early, bring plenty of water, wear sturdy footwear and stay on appropriate trails. The rocks are not a casual playground; climbing involves real exposure and risk. Check City of Los Angeles park information, weather and any access restrictions before visiting.

Pair your trip with: a local meal in Chatsworth or a quieter stop at a public library branch on the way home.
KEEP LOCAL RESOURCES IN YOUR WEEKLY ROTATION

Public libraries and recreation centers are practical community assets that residents can use without buying a ticket. The Los Angeles Public Library offers branch calendars, free learning resources, public computers and programs for children, teenagers and adults. Search LAPL events by date and location.

For an outdoor family outing, visit Serrania Park at 20726 Wells Drive in Woodland Hills or Shadow Ranch Recreation Center at 22633 Vanowen Street in West Hills. Consult LA City Recreation and Parks for facility details, opening information and any notices.

These are actual local resources, not invented one-off events. Readers should check the official calendars for specific October programming.
